One of North Wildwood's most recognizable landmarks is back. After nearly 20 years of renovations and restoration work, the Children's Fresh Air Home at 1100 Surf Avenue in North Wildwood, NJ, celebrated its reopening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on June 13, 2026.

The reopening marks an important milestone for a nonprofit organization that has helped thousands of children from underserved communities experience the Jersey Shore for more than a century.

A North Wildwood Tradition Dating Back to 1896

The story of the Children's Fresh Air Home began in 1896 with L. Ida Dukes, a Philadelphia mother of six who wanted to give children from disadvantaged backgrounds an opportunity to escape the city during the summer.

What began with outings along the Delaware River eventually grew into a summer program at the Jersey Shore. In 1923, the Children's Fresh Air Home opened its permanent North Wildwood location at 11th and Surf Avenues.

Over the years, the organization has served more than 20,000 children, providing beach experiences, activities, meals, and opportunities they might not otherwise have had.

Nearly Two Decades of Restoration

In 2006, the Children's Fresh Air Home temporarily closed its building because of serious structural concerns.

What followed was an extensive, multi-phase restoration project supported by donors, volunteers, and community organizations.

Work included rebuilding the foundation, restoring the exterior, and completely renovating the interior of the approximately 10,000-square-foot building.

The restored facility now features an elevator, accessible accommodations, updated heating and cooling systems, a commercial kitchen, and modern facilities designed to support its programs.

The June 2026 ribbon cutting celebrated the completion of a project that had been years in the making.

What's Next for the Children's Fresh Air Home?

The building's reopening doesn't mean every program returned immediately.

During summer 2026, the organization continued its If Just For A Day program, which brings children to North Wildwood for beach visits and activities. The renovated facility also opened opportunities for youth groups to use the property.

According to the organization's published plans, its traditional weekly overnight camp is expected to return in summer 2027.

The reopening is an important step toward restoring the full range of experiences that made the Children's Fresh Air Home such a meaningful part of North Wildwood's history.
